The Ambrus Hotel was a narrow dwelling wedged in the middle of a row of identical buildings near the railway bridge.
The structure was dilapidated and there were strange rumours about the hotel. One of them claimed that in one of the rooms, people would vanish into thin air. Genko didn’t care. He’d chosen it as a place to die because it matched the scruffy image of himself he’d always offered the world. Nobody must know the real Bruno Genko – the scrupulous professional, the perfectionist, the man who had a fortune concealed abroad and a collage by Hans Arp on a wall in his apartment.
And above all, nobody must ever have access to his secrets.
It wasn’t about what he had discovered during his delicate investigations: what he was trying to hide were the methods used for solving these cases. Genko wasn’t proud of what he’d been forced to do.
He keyed in Linda’s date of birth and the combination clicked. He took out the envelope and assessed its weight with a glance. He didn’t think he’d ever see it again. Then why hadn’t he got rid of it himself instead of asking his friend to see to it after his death? The truth was, he’d kept it because he knew a moment like this could come, when every tool – however illicit – would be necessary to reach a goal. In that case, the contents of the envelope would turn out to be useful.
He put it in a canvas hotel laundry bag and immediately left the room.
Once he was home, he performed the usual ritual of removing his clothes in the hallway, never taking his eyes off the bag he’d temporarily put down on the floor. He was afraid, because, basically, he’d sworn to himself he would never stoop to making pacts with the devil.
He was streaming with sweat and would happily have had a shower but instead, he put on a tracksuit and sat down at the computer in his office. No classical music this time, and the Dadaist work on the wall in front of his desk no longer had the power to cheer him.
He broke the seals on the envelope and opened it with a paper knife. He took out a small silver box and connected it to the MacBook Air with a USB lead. Then he connected to the internet.
The object he had hidden at the Ambrus Hotel opened onto a secret passage.
After years on the job, Bruno Genko had learnt that there are places on the face of the earth where rules – all rules, without exception – are suspended until further notice. Places where evil prospers, unobstructed, and the secret nature of men can be let loose without limitations. In these deserts of egotism, life and death have a relative value and another person’s suffering becomes a bargaining chip.
One of these places was the deep web – the dark internet inside the internet, the network beneath the network, no man’s land. Thanks to bitcoin, the
